Ebb Software originally announced Scorn in 2014 and announced it would be a PC and Xbox Series X/S in May 2020. The H. R. Giger-inspired horror game finally has an official release date, with its new trailer confirming its launch on October 21st.

“Disturbing, bizarre, and grotesque,” reads the top comet under Scorn’s trailer on YouTube, and it’s hard to find better words to describe Ebb Software’s surreal psychological horror game. The trailer opens with a shot of a strange but recognizably human corpse on an alien landscape. It then transitions to the eerily organic corridors of the strange facility where Scorn takes place. The next shot is hardly any more comforting, showing the protagonist ripping an alien umbilical cord out of their stomach. However, their mutated skin shows they are not free from the biological corruption of Scorn’s world.
The rest of the 1-minute and 20-second trailer goes by quickly, but shows a lot off in that time. After arming themselves with one of Scorn’s bizarre bio-mechanical weapons, the protagonist races through the alien structure, solving puzzles and fending off strange creatures. The latter are all pretty gruesome in their own right, though special mention must go to the tentacled abomination shown around the 48-second mark. Even the environments and non-hostile entities are similarly grotesque, such as machines made from horrifically mangled but still alive human bodies. If that’s what Scorn’s protagonist has to look forward to, it adds some extra urgency to their escape.
The final shot of Scorn’s latest gameplay trailer is a slow pan in on a massive cathedral-like structure rising from the surrounding complex. It’s unclear precisely what the towering edifice is, but it’s central to whatever is going on in the rest of the game. Reaching it may be an essential part of achieving the protagonist’s goals. If nothing else, the structure’s design makes Scorn’s influences clear as day while also showing off the impressive work of the game’s visual artists.
Gamers still don’t know much about Scorn besides its uniquely grotesque art direction, and the latest trailer only adds more questions. It’s not even clear if the main character is a mutated human or some kind of organic construct, let alone what the alien facility’s purpose might be. Presumably, players will have to find the answers for themselves when Scorn releases later this year.
