With an upcoming movie schedule to hit theaters later this year, Avalanche Software had begun production on a Doctor Strange figure to be released for Disney Infinity 3.0 alongside the film. The impressively detailed, yet still a work-in-progress figure appears to be modelled and based on actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who is set to star as the mystical doctor in the upcoming movie.

Sadly, fans will never see the final product at retail, as it joins the ranks of permanently unfinished figures like Jafar, Peter Pan, and the many planned premium 12-inch versions of some of the most popular Disney Infinity figures like the Incredible Hulk.

In addition to the Doctor Strange figure, sources and former employees have recently revealed a number of interesting collections and figures that were scheduled to arrive later this year and into the next iteration of the product called Disney Infinity 4.0. Planned for launch sometime in 2017, this version of the product would have launched with character figures from various intellectual properties like Star Wars Episode VIII, Cars 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and Thor: Ragnarok to name a few. The most ambitious aspect, however, would have been with the story mode, which aimed to somehow bring all of the figures together into one plot line.

Sadly, the cancellation of the franchise also caused the closure of developer Avalanche Software as well, resulting in over 300 lost jobs. Many have speculated that Disney would rather license its IPs to other developers, such as the financially successful Star Wars EA deal, rather than continue to use its own money to fund internal projects like Disney Infinity. For whatever the reason, it appears that Disney lost faith in the product and its ability to remain profitable, and instead opted to cut jobs and end a popular franchise.
